Paver Calculator
Estimate pavers for a patio or walkway from project dimensions, paver size, and a waste factor.

Paver Calculator Results
Results update in your browser as you edit inputs. They are planning estimates, not complete shopping lists.
Enter project dimensions to calculate material quantity.
Assumptions
- The patio or walkway is treated as a rectangle.
- Base gravel, bedding sand, edge restraint, and joint sand are not included.
- Pattern cuts and border pieces should be covered with a waste factor.
- If your pavers are sold by the box or pallet, divide the result by the package quantity or coverage and round up.
- Increase waste for diagonal, running-bond, curved, or bordered layouts.
- Cost outputs use only the unit prices you enter.
Formula
- Patio area = patio length x patio width.
- Paver area = paver width x paver height converted to square feet.
- Pavers needed = ceil(patio area / paver area).
- Pavers including waste = ceil(pavers needed x (1 + waste factor)).
How to Use the Paver Calculator
- Enter the patio or walkway length and width in feet.
- Enter paver width and height in inches.
- Choose a waste factor based on layout pattern, cuts, borders, and curves.
- Use the paver count for the surface units only.
- Estimate base gravel and bedding sand separately before final planning.
Paver Calculator Examples
10 ft x 10 ft patio with 12 in pavers
A 100 sq ft patio using 12 in by 12 in pavers needs 100 pavers before waste and 105 pavers with a 5% waste factor.
- Area: 100 sq ft
- Paver coverage: 1 sq ft
- Base count: 100
- With 5% waste: 105
12 ft x 12 ft patio with 8 in pavers
An 8 in by 8 in paver covers about 0.44 sq ft. A 144 sq ft patio needs about 324 pavers before waste and about 357 with 10% waste.
- Area: 144 sq ft
- Paver coverage: about 0.44 sq ft
- Base count: about 324
- With 10% waste: about 357
Units and Parameters Quick Reference
Paver count inputs
Paver size and waste factor can change the count much more than users expect.
| Input | Unit | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Patio length and width | ft | Used to calculate surface area. |
| Paver width and height | in | Converted to square feet per paver. |
| Waste factor | % | Adds pieces for cuts, breakage, and patterns. |
| Paver count | each | Rounded up to whole pavers. |
| Base materials | separate | Use the paver base calculator for gravel and sand. |
This calculator does not include base gravel, bedding sand, edge restraint, joint sand, or compaction.
Need base gravel and bedding sand?
This paver calculator estimates surface paver units. Patio and walkway projects usually also need compacted base gravel and a bedding sand layer.
Example calculation
Example: 10 x 10 patio
A 10 ft by 10 ft patio using 12 in by 12 in pavers needs 100 pavers before waste and 105 pavers with 5% waste.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting base gravel and bedding sand are separate materials.
- Using nominal paver size when the actual size differs.
- Not increasing waste for diagonal or running-bond patterns.
FAQ
Does this include paver base?
No. It estimates paver units only. Use the paver base gravel calculator for base gravel and bedding sand.
Can I enter rectangular pavers?
Yes. Enter the paver width and height in inches.
How many pavers do I need for a 10x10 patio?
With 12 in by 12 in pavers, a 10x10 patio needs 100 pavers before waste and 105 pavers with 5% waste.
Should I add more waste for a running-bond pattern?
Often yes. Patterns, borders, curves, and diagonal layouts usually need a higher waste factor than a simple grid.
