Worked example

How Much Mulch for 1000 Square Feet?

This example uses a 50 ft by 20 ft bed to represent 1000 sq ft, with 2 in depth and 10% settling overage.

Inputs used in this example

  • Area: 50 ft by 20 ft, equal to 1000 sq ft.
  • Depth: 2 inches.
  • Settling / overage: 10%.
  • Bag size: 2 cubic feet per bag.

Expected output

The calculator estimates about 166.67 cubic feet before overage, 6.17 cubic yards before overage, 183.33 cubic feet with overage, and 92 bags at 2 cubic feet per bag.

When to adjust this example

  • Use 3 inches or more only if that depth is appropriate for the plants and existing mulch level.
  • Use cubic yards for bulk mulch and bag count for bagged mulch.
  • Irregular beds should be broken into smaller rectangles or measured as equivalent area.

Formula explanation

  1. Convert 2 inches to 0.167 feet.
  2. Multiply 1000 square feet by depth in feet.
  3. Apply the 10% settling overage.
  4. Divide cubic feet by 27 for cubic yards and by bag size for bag count.

FAQ

Should I buy bulk mulch or bags?

Use cubic yards when buying bulk mulch. Use bag count only when buying bagged mulch with a known bag size.

Does this account for plants already in the bed?

No. Plant displacement and existing mulch depth are not modeled separately.
