Drywall

Drywall Calculator

Estimate drywall sheet count for room walls, with an option to include the ceiling and choose common sheet sizes.

Assumptions

  • The room is treated as a rectangle.
  • Openings, seams, orientation, fasteners, mud, tape, and corner bead are not included.
  • Sheet counts are rounded up to whole sheets.
  • Waste is applied after rounding the base sheet count, so the estimate may be slightly conservative for small rooms.
  • Cost outputs use only the unit prices you enter.

Formula

  1. Wall area = 2 x (room width + room length) x wall height.
  2. Ceiling area = room width x room length if included.
  3. Base sheets = ceil(total area / sheet area).
  4. Sheets including waste = ceil(base sheets x (1 + waste factor)).

How to Use the Drywall Calculator

  1. Enter room width, room length, and wall height.
  2. Choose the drywall sheet size you plan to use.
  3. Select whether the ceiling should be included.
  4. Add a waste factor for cuts, damaged sheets, and layout changes.
  5. Use the sheet count as a planning estimate before checking openings, seams, fasteners, and finishing materials.

Drywall Calculator Examples

12 ft x 12 ft room with ceiling

A 12 ft by 12 ft room with 8 ft walls has 384 sq ft of wall area and 144 sq ft of ceiling area. With 4 x 8 sheets, that is 17 sheets before waste and about 19 sheets with 10% waste.

  • Wall area: 384 sq ft
  • Ceiling area: 144 sq ft
  • Base sheets: 17
  • With 10% waste: about 19 sheets

10 ft x 12 ft room without ceiling

A 10 ft by 12 ft room with 8 ft walls has 352 sq ft of wall area. With 4 x 8 sheets, that is 11 sheets before waste and about 13 sheets with 10% waste.

  • Wall area: 352 sq ft
  • Ceiling: not included
  • Base sheets: 11
  • With 10% waste: about 13 sheets

Units and Parameters Quick Reference

Drywall sheet planning inputs

The calculator estimates sheet count from total surface area and selected sheet size.

InputUnitPlanning note
Room dimensionsftUsed to calculate perimeter and ceiling area.
Wall heightftUse the finished wall height.
Sheet sizeft4 x 8, 4 x 10, and 4 x 12 sheets cover different areas.
Ceiling includedyes/noAdds room length x width to total area.
Waste factor%Applied after the base sheet count is rounded up.

Sheet layout, seams, openings, screws, tape, joint compound, and corner bead are not included.

Example calculation

Example: 12 x 12 room with ceiling

A 12 ft by 12 ft room with 8 ft walls has 384 sq ft of wall area plus 144 sq ft of ceiling area. With 4 x 8 sheets, that is 17 sheets before waste.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting the ceiling when it is part of the job.
  • Assuming sheet count also covers joint compound and tape.
  • Ignoring transport limits for longer sheet sizes.

FAQ

Does this include drywall mud and tape?

No. It estimates sheet quantity only.

Which sheet size should I choose?

Use the sheet size you plan to buy and can safely transport and handle.

How many drywall sheets do I need for a 12x12 room?

With 8 ft walls, a 12x12 room plus ceiling is about 528 sq ft. With 4 x 8 sheets and 10% waste, the estimate is about 19 sheets.

Should I use 4x8 or 4x12 drywall sheets?

Larger sheets can reduce seams but are heavier and harder to handle. Use the sheet size you actually plan to install.

Does this include doors and windows?

No. It uses full wall area for a simple estimate. Large openings may reduce sheet count, but layout waste can offset that reduction.
